.NET Core Troubleshooting Tips

For our customers who are having trouble deploying .NET Core applications to Everleap’s cloud hosting system, I’ve compiled a few tips that will hopefully help you save hours of frustration getting it deployed:

• Everleap currently only supports SCD (Self-Contained Deployment) of .NET Core apps. FDD (Framework Dependent Deployment) is not supported at this time, therefore, we have provided guides on how to convert your application from FDD to SCD for Visual Studio 2015 and Visual Studio 2017.
• If you get the “502.5 – Process Failure” error message, you’ll need to enable error logging in your web.config file. Once enabled, you can then review the error messages that stdout produces by logging into your account using FTP and downloading the log files.  In my experience, most of the errors I’ve seen are due to missing assemblies or assembly versions mismatch.
• If you completed the above two steps or get 0 bytes for an error log (i.e. no error), then feel free to contact our Support Department (Log in with your control panel credentials). These are the most difficult cases to troubleshoot because sometimes the process just dies before any error can be recorded in the server’s logs.

Real-World Example

We went through the steps outlined above with a customer, confirming that they converted their application to SCD and that the stdout logs were enabled.  It returned 0 bytes.  Fortunately, in this case, the server logs recorded this:

“Failed to start process with commandline ‘”dotnet” .\BroadcastAdmin.dll’, ErrorCode = ‘0x80070002’.”

It turned out that because we don’t support FDD deployment, the “dotnet.exe” file is not used to startup the process.  The process is spun up by the executable created when converted to SCD (i.e. BroadcastAdmin.exe) so his application started working perfectly after he changed the processPath in the web.config file from “dotnet” to “.\BroadcastAdmin.exe”.  I provided this an example in case this helps someone out in the future.
